Invitation from Avocados Australia and the New Zealand Avocados Growers' Association
This year in Australia’s far north avocado growing region the 2009 Australian and New Zealand Avocado Growers’ Conference will be held. Held only every eight years in Australia, it is a great opportunity to see an avocado growing region that is usually hidden away by distance, while learning the latest techniques for growing, finding out all about avocado marketing and how the economy and climate change are going to impact on your farm.
Avocados Australia and the New Zealand Avocado Growers’ Association welcomes all avocado growers and members of the supply chain to attend the fourth quadrennial Australian and New Zealand Avocado Growers’ Conference, on 21-24 July at Cairns Convention Centre, Cairns.
It is expected that the number of growers attending this year will be in excess of 400. The added benefits to growers and our industries by alternating the venue either side of the Tasman are enormous. You will be able to catch up with old friends and maintain your networks, meet new people and make new friends. Grower networks and the exchange of information have grown considerably over the last 16 years of joint conferences.
The theme of the conference is "Avocados for Life". An exciting line up of speakers from the international arena, Australia and New Zealand will present the latest knowledge and understanding of important issues relevant to successful avocado production. Areas being covered include:
- Flowering and fruit set: yield, fruit size and production
- New germplasm and global breeding programs
- Pest and disease control strategies
- Integrated production systems and the impact on market access
- Postharvest quality and outturn
- Competing in a global world
- Building demand: promotions, marketing, customer trends and expectations
We look forward to welcoming you to Cairns in July!

This quadrennial conference incorporates the interests of Avocados Australia www.avocado.org.au and New Zealand Avocado Growers Association and Industry Council www.nzavocado.co.nz.
Both groups are their countries peak industry body representing the interests of the ever growing Australian and New Zealand avocado industry.
We work with all parts of the “supply chain”, from production through to the consumer. Our aim is to continually improve the ability of the entire industry, not just growers, to provide a healthy, profitable and safe product for all consumers.
The Conference appeals to all sectors of this vibrant industry with special sessions covering every part of the supply chain – a more holistic view of the industry.
The Conference is a strategic part of achieving our competitive advantage - being a united and well-organised industry with funding for R&D and market development.
It also sets the scene for Australia’s hosting of the World Avocado Congress in 2011 where the world will visit us and map out the future of this fabulous fruit. I urge you to become part of our Supply Chain Showcase.

Supply Chain Showcase
The Supply Chain Showcase is open to sponsors only and will allow non-competing sponsors to be part of the avocado industry’s first “open” display - an exhibition concept designed to showcase the interrelated facets of producing, distributing and retailing avocados.
Our vision is to show the Supply Chain Showcase in a borderless (non booth) way in the centre of the industry exhibition space at the Cairns Convention Centre. The Showcase will be the centrepiece of the industry exhibition and will display farm vista’s, nursery, farm machinery, fruit grading, packing, transport, export, banking options, – perhaps even a fruit shop and other key elements.
Of course the final “face” of the display will depend on the number of participating sponsors and will be developed in consultation with them. But it will certainly be different from the typical 3 x 3 metre booth display – it will be so much more! Each supply chain member will have the opportunity to have a custom made space, which they will create with the Project Managers. This is a rare opportunity for sponsors to have exactly what they want in their space!
Once sponsors are confirmed, the Project Managers will work with each to develop their portion of the Supply Chain Showcase. Sponsors will be required to share the cost of the display – however it will be more cost and time effective then designing and erecting a custom booth. Please note that sponsors do not have to participate in the Supply Chain Showcase and may simply take up their standard booth entitlements.
To express your interest in the Supply Chain Showcase please contact the Project Managers at anzagc@avocado.org.au to discuss your tailor made industry display.
